Aiden Markram, South Africa’s men’s T20I captain, is thrilled about his fresh start with Durban’s Super Giants in SA20 season four. After leading Sunrisers Eastern Cape to back-to-back titles and a runners-up spot last season, Markram moves on following three strong years with the team.
The Super Giants grabbed him for R14 million at the auction, even after Sunrisers used their Right to Match card. “It’s exciting—something new always is,” Markram said in a tournament release on Monday. He admits feeling sad to leave Sunrisers, praising the great people and coach Adie Birrell there.
Markram draws parallels to his time with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. “Going to Durban brings new challenges, different conditions, and fresh teammates,” he added. “It’s always fun to tackle those and see what’s next.”
The Super Giants struggled in season three, winning just two of 10 matches and finishing last. But Markram sees real potential in their revamped squad. It features big names like England’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler, explosive batter Heinrich Klaasen, speedy bowlers Kwena Maphaka and Gerald Coetzee, West Indies spin wizard Sunil Narine, and Afghanistan’s young talent Noor Ahmad.
“I looked at the squad—there are some world-class players,” Markram said. He especially raves about Klaasen, who’s been on fire for the past couple of years. Markram also highlights smart auction picks, including young stars with that special X-factor. “I’m pumped to connect with everyone and build a fun, happy vibe. That’s the heart of SA20, and I bet it’ll be an awesome time in Durban.”
The Super Giants kick off SA20 season four against defending champions MI Cape Town at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on December 26.
