Mitch Marsh signals end of Shield career but leaves door ajar for Test recall: Reports

New Delhi, Dec 8 (LatestNewsX) – Mitchell Marsh has told his Western Australia teammates that this will be his last season playing red‑ball cricket for the state, reports Nine newspapers. While he has chosen to step away from long‑format domestic play, he remains open to being recalled for the Australian side if the selectors see fit amid the current Ashes series.
Such a move is unusual; a player withdraws from Sheffield Shield yet keeps the door open for Test selection. Nevertheless, the 34‑year‑old appears aware that extending his tally beyond 46 Tests would be unlikely, yet he says he wouldn’t turn down a chance if it were to arise unexpectedly.
His decision may have been prompted by a disappointing outing at the MCG against Victoria, where he recorded two single‑digit innings. In recent seasons, Marsh has played only nine games for Western Australia since 2019, a sharp drop from the more demanding schedule he carried through the early part of his career, beginning with his 2009 debut.
Previously, selectors had earmarked Marsh as a possible addition later in the Ashes, even though his red‑ball practice had been limited. He was omitted ahead of the Sydney Test in the 2024–25 home summer, with Beau Webster taking his place.
Marsh’s roller‑coaster Test career peaked in 2023, marked by a spectacular century at Headingley and solid displays that earned him the Allan Border Medal. Over his Test stint, he has scored 2,083 runs at an average of 28.53 and taken 51 wickets at 40.41.
Although his prospects in red‑ball cricket are unclear, Marsh still plays a key role in Australia’s white‑ball strategy, still leading both the ODI and T20 squads.
Pre‑Ashes, the Australian coach Andrew McDonald hinted at the possibility. He said: “We would be comfortable picking someone, and if you want to put a name to it, Mitch Marsh, out of white‑ball cricket if we felt like that was going to benefit the Test team. He’s the captain of the white‑ball team. It’s very hard for him to vacate and balance out Test preparation, if he were to be in the window for that. We still haven’t given up on Mitch Marsh’s Test career.”
