Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita had a packed schedule in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, joining the big celebrations for the country’s 50th Independence Day. He stepped in to represent Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the events, strengthening ties between India and Papua New Guinea.
During the festivities, Margherita met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the #PNGAt50 commemorations. In a lively post on X (formerly Twitter), he shared: “Glad to meet Honble @AlboMP, Prime Minister of Australia, in Port Moresby on the sidelines of the commemorative events marking #PNGAt50.”

The visit wouldn’t be complete without connecting with the Indian community there. Margherita called the over 4,000-strong Indian diaspora a “living bridge” between India and Papua New Guinea. They contribute through culture, economy, and community work, helping build stronger partnerships. In his post, he said: “A heartwarming evening with our vibrant Indian family in Papua New Guinea. Over 4,000 strong, they are a living bridge between India and PNG, playing a pivotal role in strengthening our partnership through cultural, economic, and community contributions.”
