Alex Marquez’s win in Malaysia gives him a perfect finale to a strong weekend in MotoGP.
After securing second place in the overall MotoGP standings on Saturday, the Spanish rider rounded up the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday with a comfortable 2.6‑second victory.
Marquez, racing the #73 for BK8 Gresini, wore his confidence on his shoulders. He passed teammate Pedro Acosta at Turn 4 on the first lap and kept the lead, cutting out Francesco Bagnaia, who had started from pole and fought for the front two places throughout the race.
Bagnaia, the Ducati rider for the Lenovo Team, couldn’t maintain his early advantage. By lap 3 he was locked under Acosta, who tried to overtakes around turns 5 and 9 but failed to pull ahead. The duels kept Acosta close to the rear of Bagnaia, which allowed Marquez to build a 0.8‑second advantage that grew to 1.8 seconds by lap 13.
At lap 14, Marquez posted a 2:00.546 lap—about a second faster than Bagnaia and over half a second quicker than Acosta. Even the 4th‑place rider, Joan Mir of Honda HRC, posted a 2‑second lap, keeping that podium spot alive.
The final laps took a dramatic turn. Bagnaia suffered a mechanical hiccup that left him unable to challenge Mir. Mir moved into third place and gained 9 points from Sprints, a boost after Saturday’s DNF.
Meanwhile, Acosta stayed behind Marquez for the whole race, finishing 2.8 seconds behind with a solid second‑place finish. Marquez’s lap times gave him the fastest overall speed in any lap, cementing his place on the podium.
The result is a milestone for Marquez, who claimed his first MotoGP win outside of Spain. It also confirms the rise of the young KTM rider, Acosta, who consistently chases the leaders, and confirms the solid campaign for Mir and Honda, who capture their second podium of the season.
Key takeaways:
- Alex Marquez – 1st place in Malaysian Grand Prix, 2nd overall title.
- Pedro Acosta – 2nd place, fastest KTM performance in Singapore & Malaysia.
