During Pakistan’s chase of 248, an unusual run‑out controversy erupted on the final ball of the fourth over. After a missed delivery, India’s Deepti Sharma sent a ball from the slip cordon that hit the stumps. Muneeba Ali had just lifted her bat, but her feet hadn’t returned to the crease. The on‑field umpire initially ruled her not out. The TV umpire then reversed the call to “out,” causing confusion among players and fans alike.
The replay on the big screen showed the ball dislodging the stumps while Muneeba’s bat was briefly above the ground. The error sparked a short stoppage as the bench and on‑field officials debated the decision. Muneeba returned to the dressing room looking bewildered, while Pakistan captain Fatima Sana talked quietly with fourth‑umpire Kim Cotton. Eventually, the captain asked Muneeba to leave the field, and the play resumed.
After Pakistan’s loss of 88 runs, national captain Diana Baig addressed reporters. “The issue has already been settled,” she said. “I don’t want to talk much about it now. Whatever happened, I think it has been resolved.” Her comments reflect that the governing body and the umpires have confirmed the decision is correct.
The ICC Playing Conditions (Section 30.1.2) clarify that a batter is out of their ground if, during a run or a dive, they lose contact with the ground or the bat after having grounded a part of their body or bat beyond the popping crease. That rule applied in this case.
The incident highlights how quickly on‑field confusion can turn into a teaching moment about the strict rules that govern cricket, and it serves as a reminder that even in high‑stakes matches, the final decision can be clear once all the officials have done their work.
