Namibia secure berth in T20 World Cup 2026 with dominant win over Tanzania

Namibia made history on Thursday by becoming the first African team to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The cricket powerhouse from southern Africa crushed Tanzania in the regional qualifier semifinal in Harare, securing their spot with a convincing 63-run victory.
This win marks Namibia’s fourth trip to the global T20 stage, following strong showings in the 2021 Super 12s, and group-stage appearances in 2022 and 2024. Fans of Namibia cricket team will remember their grit from past tournaments, and this latest triumph keeps the momentum alive.
Tanzania won the toss and put Namibia in to bat first. The Namibians started rocky, losing four quick wickets in the powerplay—Jan Frylinck, Malan Kruger, Louren Steenkamp, and Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton all back in the hut early. But captain Gerhard Erasmus and all-rounder JJ Smit stepped up big time to rescue the innings.
Erasmus played a steady knock of 55 runs off 41 balls, smashing six fours to steady the ship. Smit, meanwhile, went on the attack with an unbeaten 61 from 43 deliveries, including a four and four massive sixes. Their partnership turned the game around, helping Namibia post a challenging 174 for 6 in 20 overs.
When Tanzania came out to chase in the T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers, Namibia’s bowlers didn’t let them breathe. Smit starred again with the ball, grabbing three wickets for just 16 runs—he clean bowled Arun Yadav and Dhrumit Mehta off back-to-back deliveries in the sixth over, then added Mukesh Suthar later. Ben Shikongo chipped in with 3 for 21, keeping the pressure on.
Tanzania fought in patches but couldn’t build momentum. They batted out their 20 overs yet finished well short at 111 all out, handing Namibia a dominant win in the Harare showdown.
Now, Namibia joins South Africa—who qualified automatically—in the 2026 lineup. One more African spot remains up for grabs, with Kenya facing Zimbabwe in the other semifinal to decide who joins the party. Cricket lovers across Africa are buzzing about what’s next for these rising teams.
