New Delhi, Oct 25 – The Indian cricket board’s vice‑president, Rajiv Shukla, said he was deeply sorry after two Australian women cricketers were molested on their way from the team hotel to a local cafe in Indore. The players, who are currently competing in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, faced a man on a bicycle who leaned over one of them and “touched inappropriately” before slipping away.
Police acted quickly after the team’s security manager filed a complaint, and the suspect was taken into custody on Khajrana Road. CCTV footage, hotel logs and eyewitness accounts helped officers identify the attacker, named Aqeel Khan, who already has a criminal record. The accused is now being held while investigators dig deeper.
Shukla urged that the incident was “beyond imagination” and promised to tighten security for all teams at the tournament. “We will strengthen the already robust protection to make sure nothing like this happens again,” he told reporters. The police have arrested the man, and the court will decide the next steps.
The incident has sparked international outrage and raised fresh worries about the safety of women athletes in India. With improved security already in place, officials say the rest of the Women’s World Cup should go on as planned.
