Beijing, Oct 27 – Lando Norris won the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand‑Prix from pole, taking the drivers’ championship lead from teammate Oscar Piastri with only four races left in the season.
Norris started first on the grid after a commanding Saturday qualifying. He hit the start line, opened a gap on lap one and never let anyone catch up. The British driver crossed the finish line 30 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, which won the race for the team’s better half.
Max Verstappen in the Red Bull “red‑diamond” car chased Leclerc all night, but a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was called to clear a crash between Carlos Sainz and a Williams. The safety period forced Verstappen to give up the last‑minute overtaking chance he could have had – the VSC kept the red‑stretch gap wide open.
Piastri, who had struggled in qualifying, was starting seventh and was out of the win race at the beginning of the meeting. He ended up fifth after a messy first corner that dropped him to 11th. The Australian was clearly frustrated: “It was a tough weekend for me, I didn’t pace up like I expected,” he told the press after the race.
The high‑point of the event was probably Kurtọ’s Haas driver, Ollie Bearman, who climbed from ninth on the grid to fourth place, the best finish of his career. He ran up the field after the early collision and defended his position well against the faster cars.
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and George Russell finished sixth and seventh. Russell complained on the radio that he was stuck behind Antonelli, saying the pace of the Haas made no difference when staying close to the front.
Lewis Hamilton was in eighth, after a ten‑second penalty for running off the track earlier in the race. Hamilton told the team radio that others had done the same and probably liked the outcome. The penalty knocked him out of fighting for the win but he still completed the race in the top ten.
Esteban Ocon finished ninth for Haas and Gabby Bortoleto rounded out the top ten in the Sauber.
The result set the stage for the rest of the season. Norris is now up one point over Piastri in the standings, while Max Verstappen is 35 points behind and must be very proud to be the only one in the top three. The points swing also tightened the constructors race: Ferrari now has 356 points, one ahead of Mercedes, while Red Bull sits nine points behind.
The championship will finish at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo on Nov 9 for the Brazilian Grand‑Prix – and with Norris in front, fans are sure to be watching closely.
