Four killed as two SUVs collide near Bhopal

On Sunday, a head‑on collision on the Bhopal‑Vidisha highway near Bairasia—about 60 km from the capital—left four people dead and one critically wounded. Police described the wreckage as chaotic, with both SUVs mangled beyond recognition and debris strewn across the road.

All four victims were in a single SUV returning from Bhopal to Sheopur after a day at the capital. The Bairasia police confirmed that the deceased were Anees Sahab, Khalid Bhai, Sajid Bhai and Naved Bhai, all residents of Sheopur, and that their identities were verified through family contact and local records.

The sole survivor, Rafaqat Gauri, sustained severe injuries and is now in intensive care at Barasia Hospital, where doctors say he is in a critical but stable condition.

Early findings suggest that speeding and poor visibility from patchy fog may have played a role, although investigators are still looking into possible mechanical failures or driver mistakes.

“All of them came to Bhopal to attend Maulana Mahmood Madani’s discourse. After attending the event, they were returning to Sheopur in their car. They met with the accident at the Barasia‑Nazirabad road, 60 km away from Bhopal on Saturday night. The vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the incident occurred. We have seized both SUVs for forensic examination, and a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” Sen told reporters.

Autopsies are being conducted at Bhopal district hospital to determine the exact cause of death. Local officials are urging road users to drive carefully on rural highways, especially at night, amid a spike in accidents in the area.

This fatal crash marks the third deadly collision in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal division this month, prompting road‑safety advocates to call for stricter speed limits and improved lighting on state roads.
