Meghalaya showcases organic push, farm-to-market success at World Food India

Meghalaya is making waves at World Food India, India’s largest food processing event, by showcasing its booming farm-to-market system. The event kicked off on Thursday at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and wraps up Saturday, drawing crowds from around the world.

As a spotlight state at the expo, Meghalaya unveiled a dedicated pavilion that highlights its key projects, export-focused supply chains, and community-led processing efforts. These initiatives are turning the northeastern state into a major organic food hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the overall event, which unites policymakers, international investors, agri-tech experts, and top food brands from more than 90 countries. Covering 100,000 square meters with over 2,000 exhibitors, World Food India 2025 spotlights India’s push to become a global food powerhouse.

Union Food Processing Minister Chirag Paswan and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma cut the ribbon on the pavilion, emphasizing the state’s bountiful natural resources and expanding investment opportunities.

At the heart of Meghalaya’s growth is its Organic Mission 2024-28, which targets certifying 100,000 hectares for organic farming by 2028 with a budget of Rs 250 crore. Already, 24,000 hectares have earned certification, and over 40,000 farmers have joined organic value chains.

The state’s success relies on a unique Community Public Private Partnership (CPPP) approach, blending local ownership, government funding, and private-sector tech. Eight PRIME Hubs are up and running, backed by more than Rs 220 crore in investments. These hubs process 6,000 kilograms of produce daily, support 15,000 farmers, and have created over 1,500 jobs.

Looking ahead, Meghalaya aims to expand to 55 PRIME Hubs by 2032, plus 40 large processing units and 540 micro-units, boosting its organic farming and food processing sectors.

A fresh highlight is the launch of “Meghalaya Collectives – Organic,” an umbrella brand that packages premium products like Lakadong turmeric, Khasi mandarin, Sohiong berries, and Kew pineapple. This traceable branding aims to lift farmer incomes and secure spots in high-end markets at home and abroad.

To strengthen ties, Meghalaya inked four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Lulu Group Retail, The Staple Kaka, Plantrich Agri Tech, and Treta Agro (Just Organic). These deals open doors to markets in Gulf Cooperation Council countries and major Indian cities.

Exports are picking up steam too. Since 2022, the state has sent organic pineapples, mandarins, and ginger to Middle Eastern spots, including Dubai’s Lulu Hypermarket. A top official noted that recent shipments include over 20 metric tons of Khasi mandarin and a groundbreaking sea delivery of 15 metric tons of ginger in 2025. These moves solidify Meghalaya’s place in India’s growing food export scene.
