Victoria (Australia) – India showed why it’s the top country in para‑badminton at the Australian Para Badminton International 2025, with standout performances from Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam.
Bhagat captured two gold medals. In the men’s singles SL3 final he beat fellow Indian Manoj Sarkar in straight sets, 21‑15 21‑17. The match lasted 27 minutes, but Bhagat’s sharp tactics—mixing careful net play with powerful smashes—kept Sarkar on the back foot. “It was tough because we know each other’s game,” Bhagat said. “I’m proud to win two golds here and also happy that Manoj made it to the final.”
Later, Bhagat and Kadam teamed up in the men’s doubles SL3‑SL4 final. They edged out another Indian pair, Umesh Vikram Kumar and Surya Kant Yadav, in a three‑set thriller that finished 21‑11 19‑21 21‑18. The pair’s chemistry and aggressive play earned Bhagat a second gold medal.
Kadam added a silver in the men’s singles SL4 after a hard‑fought three‑set final, 21‑23 21‑14 19‑21, beating Surya Kant. “It’s disappointing I couldn’t finish the match the way I wanted, but I’ll come back stronger,” he said. “My goal is to turn that silver into gold next time.”
India’s dominance spread across many events. Manasi Joshi won two golds, taking the women’s singles SL3 over Australia’s Celine Vinot and pairing with Ruthick Ragupathi for mixed doubles SL3‑SU5. Ragupathi also claimed gold in men’s doubles SU5 with partner Chirag Baretha, defeating England’s Robert Donald and Sean O’Sullivan.
The men’s doubles SH6 saw Sivarajan Solaimalai win gold and Sudarshan Muthuswamy take silver. Yashodhan Ravankole and Dheeraj Saini claimed gold in men’s doubles SU5, beating Australia’s Brandon Ka Nam Poon and Michael Simpkins. Sarumathi topped the women’s singles SL4 + SU5 field, defeating Australia’s Zashka Gunson.
Other Indian medalists included Umesh Vikram Kumar and Surya Kant Yadav with a silver in men’s doubles SL3‑SL4 and Manoj Sarkar’s silver in men’s singles SL3.
Overall, India finished the tournament on top of the standings, reinforcing its status as the world leader in para‑badminton.
