Mayor-elect Mamdani’s pick for community safety committee Alex Vitale is anti-cop professor who penned ‘The End of Policing’
Among the people Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani has tapped for his transition team on community safety is a well‑known author: Alex Vitale, a sociology professor at Brooklyn College who wrote the 2017 book The End of Policing.
On Monday Vitale announced on X that he’d joined the team, saying he was “excited … to work on community safety issues. A New Era for NYC.”
His book argues that the real issue isn’t police training or diversity, but the “dramatic and unprecedented expansion and intensity of policing” over the past four decades—essentially the problem is “policing itself.”
Vitale has long criticized the “broken‑windows” approach, pointing to the NYPD’s disproportionate targeting of minority neighborhoods.
After his appointment, some critics on social media erupted, with comments ranging from “RIP NYC” to “This is a guaranteed disaster,” and even a warning that his “anti‑cop rhetoric” could spell trouble for the city.
