At just 22, Joel Benjamin is quickly becoming one of the top young talents in India’s Prime Volleyball League. This outside hitter from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, represents the fresh wave of players shaking up the sport.

Joel started playing volleyball at age 10, sparked by his father’s influence and driven by his older brother, who also competes in the PVL. “Every step has been about improving and challenging myself,” Joel says. “The league gives me a chance to go head-to-head with the best.”

He made a big splash in Season 3 with the Chennai Blitz, racking up 55 points across eight matches. That included 52 attack points, two blocks, and one ace. His steady play and sharp attacking skills caught everyone’s eye, leading to the Bengaluru Torpedoes snapping him up for Rs 6.5 lakh at this year’s auction.

Now, Joel trains under Olympic gold medalist David Lee, and he’s loving it. “The intensity, the details, and the practice level he brings have added so much to my game,” Joel shares. “For a young player like me, it’s the perfect spot to grow. Training with the Bengaluru Torpedoes has been tough and inspiring—I’m more ready than ever. I just want to help the team win and make an impact on the court.”

Joel’s quick climb highlights how volleyball is booming in India, thanks to the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League. The pro setup, international matchups, and solid pay are opening doors for young athletes like him. “The league has taken Indian volleyball to a whole new level,” Joel notes. “We get exposure to pros, tough competition, and real systems—it’s a game-changer compared to just university or state play.”

On top of his PVL success, Joel grabbed a gold medal with Madras University at this year’s All India Inter-University Championship. He also earned bronze for Tamil Nadu at the National Games in Uttarakhand. These wins show he thrives under pressure.

Looking ahead, Joel dreams of playing for India on the world stage. “Every day, I work on getting better and learning more to support my team,” he says. “My family’s backing and the league’s chances keep me going.” With stars like Joel rising, the future of volleyball in India looks brighter than ever.
