Two-time Olympic volleyball star David Lee is returning to India’s Prime Volleyball League (PVL) as head coach for the Bengaluru Torpedoes. The American athlete, who snagged gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and bronze in 2016 Rio, has guided the team for a couple of seasons now. After finishing as runners-up in Season 2, he’s laser-focused on grabbing the title this time around in Season 4 of the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia.
“Our goal for sure, 100 percent, is to win. And that’s every single year,” Lee told reporters in Bengaluru. Fresh off his induction into the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame, the 43-year-old added that the Torpedoes look stronger than last year. “I think those goals have always been achievable, but we’ve always fallen a little bit short. This season, this team is definitely better.”
Lee knows the PVL keeps things unpredictable with players switching teams—both foreign stars and Indian talents. Still, he rates the Bengaluru Torpedoes as a top-three squad on paper, keeping them in the championship hunt. The team kicked off one of the longest preseason camps in the league, already deep into their third week of intense training. “The coach is quite impressed with how the squad is shaping up behind the scenes,” sources close to the team say.
Lee has a clear vision for his players’ setup. “I think the team is almost where I want us to be,” he explained. “We’re still dealing with a few small systems that are a little bit tricky for the new guys to understand. But I think we’re in a great spot.” To test their progress, the Torpedoes have two friendly matches lined up this week. “We’ve had a longer training camp than most,” Lee noted confidently.
Under Lee’s watch, Indian players like Sethu and Mujeeb have made big strides. Sethu has ruled as the league’s top server for two straight seasons, while Mujeeb has grown through national camp experience. The team also boasts fresh faces—young, talented rookies in their PVL debut. “I see a huge future for them,” Lee said, excited about their potential.
The Bengaluru Torpedoes aren’t holding back in their push for glory in Season 4. Lee sees the league’s growth as a game-changer for Indian volleyball. “It’s a huge positive for the sport—for Indian players to get foreign coaching, to see how international players train and play,” he shared. That impact shows in the rising strength of India’s national team. “For me, I just keep seeing the league getting better and better with every season, which is very exciting and promising.”
