Real Madrid’s Rodrygo ‘walks down memory lane’ ahead of Man City test in UCL derby

Madrid, Dec 9 (LatestNewsX) – With a fifth straight Champions League season against Manchester City on the horizon, Madrid winger Rodrygo is revisiting the moment that will always stand out for him. He said that his “most unforgettable moment” in the 2022 semi‑final came when he netted his first goal.

The two giants have already met 14 times since their first clash in 2012–13, and in the past six years they’ve fought on the pitch 10 times, producing drama in five knockout ties. Each side has been the one to end the other’s campaign in the last four seasons, and together they’ve lifted three trophies: Real Madrid in 2021/22 and 2023/24, and Manchester City in 2022/23.

In 2022, when the match moved to Paris and the “Decimocuarta” was at stake, Rodrygo’s opening strike set the stage. “I think that’s my most unforgettable football moment,” he told UEFA. “The most important moment was after I scored the first goal, when the fourth official showed six minutes of added time.” That extra time felt like an extra goal, sending the fans into a frenzy, and Rodrygo followed that with a second goal. A 95th‑minute penalty from Karim Benzema secured Real’s place in the final, where they edged Liverpool 1‑0 for a record‑tying 14th title.

The following season flipped the script. In the semi‑final rematch, Manchester City ran out 5‑1 on aggregate, snapping Real’s momentum. However, Rodrygo once again found the net and proved himself on the winning side in the 2023/24 quarter‑final, a tense shoot‑out victory that sent the club to the final.

The quarter‑final first leg in Madrid ended 3‑3, a match Rodrygo described as “amazing” and a fitting showcase of the rivalry’s intensity. He added that scoring in that game was a privilege. The return leg in Manchester finished 1‑1, with Rodrygo scoring Real’s lone goal; the French club prevailed 4‑3 on penalties thanks to disciplined defending.

In the semi‑finals, Real’s resolve was on full display against Bayern Munich, and they went on to defeat Borussia Dortmund in a showpiece final, extending their Champions League trophy count to 15.
