New Delhi – Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden spoke candidly about Rohit Sharma’s removal as India’s ODI captain, saying the decision was “an interesting move from afar.” Hayden added that it could be a bonus for Sharma if he makes the 2027 World Cup squad.
After India’s dominant innings win over the West Indies in the first Test, selectors changed the captaincy, handing the ODI armband to opener Shubman Gill. The switch means fans will watch Sharma’s batting closely when the three‑match series against Australia kicks off in Perth on Sunday.
“I see Rohit being axed as captain as an interesting move,” Hayden said on JioStar. “After such a great win in the Champions Trophy, the selectors are probably looking at the numbers. At 38, with only a couple of years left before the World Cup, age becomes a factor.”
The veteran on‑field manager likened Sharma’s era to the successes of Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, noting that the team’s achievements reflect both talent and strong leadership.
Hayden explained the strategy behind bringing Gill into a leadership role. “It’s an insurance policy to bring Shubman in and give him the chance to learn while Sharma is still around the dressing room. It would be a bonus if Rohit gets a spot for the next World Cup,” he added.
He also expressed excitement about seeing Sharma and Kohli back in action. “Rohit and Virat have played almost 600 international games. The experience they bring is huge, and the tracks in Australia are prime for them to shine.” Hayden praised their record – 13,000 runs for Kohli and Rohit’s nearly 50‑average across 273 ODI matches.
Besides the star players, Hayden highlighted the balance of youth and experience in India’s ODI squad. “Yashasvi Jaiswal is a key figure for the future. The mix of fresh energy and seasoned players is what makes India successful,” he said.
He also shared his positive view of the Australian crowd. “Aussies love great cricket. They’ve adored Kohli and Sharma in the past, and the support here will be electric. Optus Stadium in Perth is fantastic, and the large Indian community will bring crowds that want India to win.”
In short, Hayden sees the captaincy shift as a strategic move to push Sharma toward the World Cup, while praising the blend of talent at India’s doorstep as they head to Australia for the ODI series.
