India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has picked young batter Sai Sudharsan for the upcoming two-Test series against West Indies, highlighting his strong potential and the team’s plan to give him more chances. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Agarkar announced the 15-member India Test squad and shared insights on building the future lineup.
Sudharsan, who featured in India’s playing XI during their tough tour of England earlier this year, earned the selectors’ trust with his performances. Agarkar praised the 23-year-old, saying he wants to slot him in at a specific batting position for the long haul. “Sai has shown a lot of promise; he’s a very good player,” Agarkar told reporters. “Hopefully, we can give him a longish run from now on.”
With veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma nearing retirement, plus Ravichandran Ashwin stepping away recently and Mohammed Shami sidelined, Agarkar stressed the need to nurture young talent. These stars have carried India for the past decade, he noted, leaving big shoes to fill. The England tour, though not a win for India, brought positives from the youngsters, and Agarkar sees it as a foundation to build their careers.
On Karun Nair’s omission from the India Test squad, Agarkar was straightforward. Nair, who has played four Tests, didn’t meet expectations during the England trip. “Frankly, we expected a little bit more from Karun,” he said. Meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal makes a comeback after showing solid form, including a half-century in Dharamsala against England and strong outings for India A, plus experience from the Australia tour.
The India vs West Indies Test series kicks off on October 2 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, promising exciting cricket as the hosts look to blend experience with emerging stars.
