IMD predicts heavy rain across several districts in TN this week

Tamil Nadu is bracing for heavy rainfall across several districts this week, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of intensifying monsoon activity. From Tuesday to Friday, expect spells of downpours that could disrupt daily life, especially in the northern and southern parts of the state.

Starting Tuesday, September 16, isolated heavy rain is on the cards in Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Salem, and Vellore districts. Other areas might see light to moderate showers as the monsoon picks up steam.

Come Wednesday, the rain will spread wider, hitting Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Villupuram districts, along with nearby Puducherry. This could mean more widespread wet conditions.

By Thursday, the downpours intensify further in Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Mayiladuthurai districts. Keep an eye on these spots for potential flooding risks.

On Friday, northern Tamil Nadu gets another dose, with heavy rain expected in Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, and Kancheepuram. It’s shaping up to be a soggy end to the week.

In Chennai, things stay relatively calm for now. The IMD predicts light rain in a few spots on Monday, with possible evening or night showers. Sunday’s highs hit 34.2°C at Nungambakkam and 34.9°C at Meenambakkam, but expect a slight temperature bump across the state on Monday—up to 2-3°C above normal in some areas—before clouds and rain cool things down.

Authorities are urging people in low-lying and flood-prone zones to stay vigilant. Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu could lead to waterlogging and traffic snarls, so plan your commutes wisely.

Weather experts say this pattern signals the shift to the northeast monsoon, which usually kicks off in October but often brings pre-monsoon showers in September. Farmers and folks with outdoor plans should take precautions, as intermittent rain will likely continue through the week in many Tamil Nadu districts.
