India’s new limited‑overs captain, Shubman Gill, stayed upbeat after a loss to Australia in Perth, saying his side put up a brave fight even after a shaky start.
The match, shortened by rain, saw Australia chase 131 in just 26 overs. Mitchell Marsh batted for the Aussies, finishing unbeaten on 46. Josh Philippe added 37 and Matthew Renshaw scored 21 not out, pushing Australia over the line in 21.1 overs with just seven wickets to spare.
Gill said the early loss of three wickets in the powerplay put India on the back foot. “When you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you’re always playing a catch‑up game,” he explained. “We were defending 130 and we took the match deep, not until the very end, but pretty deep. We were very satisfied with that.”
India’s batting largely failed after the first few overs. Overcast skies and disciplined opposition bowling made scoring tough, and rain breaks further disrupted the rhythm. Still, the bowlers kept the game alive, picking up crucial wickets in the second innings.
Gill thanked the huge crowd that attended despite the weather. “We are very fortunate,” he said. “The fans turned up in huge numbers and hopefully they’ll be able to cheer us on in Adelaide.”
India will try to bounce back in the next ODI on October 23 in Adelaide. A stronger start from the top order will be key, especially if the conditions stay similar. The team will use the lessons from Sunday’s match to tighten its play in the next fixture.
Both sides aim to push the series to its limits.
