New Delhi, Oct 10 – Rahul Soreng, the son of Pulwama martyr Shaheed Vijay Soreng, has earned a spot on the Haryana Under‑19 cricket team. The news was celebrated by former India opener Virender Sehwag, who has been a mentor and supporter of Rahul since the boy started school in 2019.
Sehwag founded the Sehwag International School and, after the Pulwama attack, promised free education and boarding for children of martyrs. Rahul, who has lived at the school for five years, now carries that promise onto the cricket field.
“We’re proud of Rahul for making the Haryana Under‑19 squad,” Sehwag tweeted. “Since his father’s sacrifice, I’ve watched Rahul grow in both skill and character. This is a proud moment for all of us.”
Rahul’s journey began with a spot on the Haryana Under‑16 team for the Vijay Merchant Trophy last December. He had also represented the state at the Under‑14 level, showing steady progress through the ranks.
The school has featured several children from Pulwama families. Sehwag shared photos of two other talented cricketers—bat‑sman Arpit Singh, son of Pulwama hero Ram Vakeel, and bowler Rahul Soreng—training at the campus. “These kids bring us immense joy,” Sehwag wrote on Instagram, “and we’re honored to support them.”
Earlier this year Rahul was grouped with fellow talents Aditya Pandey and Shivam Anand to represent the U‑19 Jhajjar District team in a match against Karnal. Their performances continue to highlight how Sehwag’s initiative can turn tragedy into opportunity.
By championing education for children of those lost in the Pulwama terror attack, Sehwag and the school are giving hope to families who have endured deep loss. Rahul’s recent selection is a testament to the power of community, education and sport in healing and uplifting lives.
