Shan Masood told the Pakistani public that he will quit as the Test captain after Pakistan lost its second match to South Africa in Rawalpindi. The former captain said he would stay with the team but step down from the leadership role, and he will join the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as a consultant for international cricket.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement at a reception for the Pakistan and South African squads that was hosted at Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s house. Naqvi said, “We have appointed Masood as the director of international cricket.” He announced the move a week before the deadline for applying for the post. This is the first time a playing cricketer will also hold a board position at the international level.
Masood will keep playing Test matches even after taking on the board job. The PCB’s new rules for the director role now require candidates to have played Tests and ODIs for Pakistan. Masood meets those criteria, having played 44 Tests, nine ODIs and 19 T20Is. Though the PCB constitution normally limits board posts to retired players, the board is moving forward with the appointment.
The previous director of international cricket, Usman Wahla, had been suspended during the Asia Cup after he sent a protest letter about referee Andy Pycroft’s handling of a handshake incident between Pakistani captain Salman Agha and Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav. The PCB later demanded Pycroft’s removal, but the ICC rejected the demand and met with both Pakistan officials and Pycroft, who later apologized.
Now, with Masood taking the new role, the PCB hopes to strengthen Pakistan’s international cricket strategy while keeping its top performers involved in decision‑making. The board’s move comes amid growing conversations about player‑coach dual roles and the evolving structure of cricket governance in Pakistan.
