In Shanghai, the ATP Masters 1000 event was cut short when rising Italian star Jannik Sinner retired in the third round because of severe cramps. Sinner, the world No. 2, was playing Dutch challenger Tallon Griekspoor on Sunday when the pain forced him to leave the court. Griekspoor, who had already earned a spot in the last sixteen, won 6‑7(3), 7‑5, 3‑2 before Sinner could finish the match.
The first set was a tight battle. Both players held their serves all through, and the tie‑break went to Sinner. But the second set swung the other way as Griekspoor kept his composure to take 7‑5. By the middle of the third set, Sinner was already showing signs of distress, limping and looking very uncomfortable. A medical assistant checked him and declared him unable to continue. The match stopped after 2 hours and 36 minutes of play.
Griekspoor, speaking to the ATP after his win, said the conditions in Shanghai have been brutal all week. “It’s not the way you want to win,” he said. “I thought we were a little lucky to play in the evening without the sun, but this… I’m sorry for him. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
Sinner’s early exit is a serious setback for his goal of overtaking Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz for the year‑end world No. 1 spot. At the moment, Alcaraz leads the ATP Live Race with 2,540 points ahead.
On the same day, Novak Djokovic secured a win over German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann and moved into the last 16. After dropping the first set 4‑6, Djokovic fought back to win 7‑5, 6‑3 and will face Spain’s Jaume Munar in the fourth round.
