Australia Captain Alyssa Healy Eases Worries Over Ellyse Perry’s Calf Injury Before Women’s World Cup
In a big win for Australia in the first ODI against India, skipper Alyssa Healy has good news for fans. The calf issue that forced star all-rounder Ellyse Perry to retire hurt mid-innings isn’t a major concern ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. Perry got some treatment during the match in New Chandigarh, Punjab, but Healy says it was just cramps, and she stepped out only as a precaution.
Australia crushed India by eight wickets on Sunday, chasing down a solid 281/7 with over five overs to spare. With Perry sidelined temporarily, young opener Phoebe Litchfield shone bright, smashing 88 runs off just 80 balls. The seven-time World Cup winners showed their class, keeping the pressure on from start to finish.
"She’s young, she’s fine," Healy said after the match, as per the ICC’s official website. She praised the team’s aggressive approach: "We want to push the limits whether we’re batting first or chasing. Our intent stays the same, like we’re setting a big total." Healy also tipped her hat to Litchfield: "Phoebe was outstanding, and everyone chipped in to keep the scoring rate high."
Litchfield dominated the Indian bowlers, pulling off her trademark switch-hit several times. She fell short of a century, but her knock earned her the Player of the Match award. "The conditions here are great for batting – you get really flat pitches," Litchfield said. She revealed the hard work behind her shots: "A lot of practice has gone into that switch-hit. As a team, we had a clear plan to take control. Our bowlers did a fantastic job on a good wicket, holding India to 280. Chasing it down with balls to spare feels awesome."
On the Indian side, captain Harmanpreet Kaur was disappointed with dropped catches that cost them dearly. After winning the toss and batting first at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, India felt they fell short. "We were 20-30 runs short of a par total," Harmanpreet admitted. She added, "Our bowlers created chances, but we couldn’t capitalize. Australia played really good cricket – better than us today. But the next game is key; we’re staying positive and looking forward to it."
India and Australia face off again in the second ODI on Wednesday at the same venue. With the series heating up, fans can’t wait to see if India bounces back or if Australia keeps the momentum going in this crucial buildup to the Women’s Cricket World Cup.
