Shubman Gill, the skipper of India’s Test team, added a standout century to his record and moved into an exclusive club of World Test Championship (WTC) greats. On Saturday, he stayed unbeaten on 129 runs against the West Indies at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, bringing his WTC tally to 10 centuries.
Gill’s 129* came off 196 balls and was smashed through the outfield, including 16 fours and two sixes. The knock pushed his average to 43.47 and his strike‑rate to 61.36. He now has 2,826 runs in 39 WTC matches, a strong reminder of his big‑name status in Indian cricket.
The innings puts Gill ahead of former captain Rohit Sharma, who had nine WTC centuries for India. He now sits among the top five players with the most WTC centuries: England’s Joe Root (21), Australia’s Steve Smith (13), New Zealand’s Kane Williamson (11) and Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne (11). Roots lead the run‑scoring list with 6,080 runs from 69 matches; Smith follows with 4,278 runs from 55 games. Labuschagne and Ben Stokes also rank high.
Gill’s century is the fifth by an Indian captain in a single calendar year, and he is only the second—after Virat Kohli—to achieve that double feat in back‑to‑back years (2017 and 2018). He has joined the elite group of Indian batsmen who have scored five or more Test centuries in a year, alongside legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag.
In the match, India declared at 518/5 after twenty‑seven overs. Gill’s heavy batting, paired with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century, gave the home side a solid platform. The West Indies responded slowly, losing early wickets to Ravindra Jadeja and trimmed to 26/1 early on. India’s bowlers, featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, kept the Caribbean at bay with tight figures.
Gill’s record‑breaking century will be remembered as a key moment in India’s upcoming Test campaign and a milestone in the evolving history of the World Test Championship.
