Sri Lankan cricket commentator Roshan Abeysinghe praised India’s latest move – naming Shubman Gill as the ODI captain – calling it a smart decision for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Abeysinghe noted that Gill proved he could lead even when India was a young side without big names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In England, Gill drove the team to a 2‑2 draw, a result that many analysts had not expected. “He inspired and led from the front,” the commentator said, emphasizing that this shows his readiness for the captaincy.
The BCCI has already announced the squads for India’s upcoming tour of Australia, which kicks off on October 19. The Men in Blue will play three One‑Day Internationals (ODIs) and five Twenty‑20 Internationals (T20Is). Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to the side after missing the Champions Trophy 2025 final, but Shubman Gill takes the ODI helm. Shreyas Iyer, who is in good form, will be the vice‑captain.
Abeysinghe also weighed in on the controversy after India refused to hand over the Asia Cup trophy to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi. He said sports should stay separate from politics and that the decision was a political reaction. “It is unfortunate that the trophy was taken away,” he added, noting that the ACC president was the official tribute-giver, not the PCB boss.
The Asian Cup win followed a tense victory over Pakistan, after which India declined to shake hands with the Pakistani players. Abeysinghe said this reflects historical tensions, especially after the 2008 Pahalgam attack.
Overall, Abeysinghe sees Gill’s appointment as a sign of progress for Indian cricket and a step toward stronger leadership ahead of the Australia series, while calling for a focus on the sport rather than political gestures.
