Son stars as Korea beat USA 2-0 in friendly

In a thrilling international football friendly played on Sunday, South Korea, led by their superstar captain Son Heung-min, secured a convincing 2-0 victory over the United States.

The match, held at the New York Red Bulls’ home stadium in New Jersey, was a key test for both teams as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.

Son Heung-min, the Tottenham Hotspur legend who recently made a blockbuster move to MLS side Los Angeles FC, was the undisputed star of the show. He broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, expertly timing his run to stay onside before collecting a pass from Lee Jae-sung. The Korean captain then charged toward goal and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from a tight angle, beating US goalkeeper Matt Freese.

Just before halftime, Son turned provider to seal the win. He executed a clever give-and-go play in the heart of the US penalty area and swiftly flicked the ball to teammate Lee Dong-gyeong, who finished with a brilliant back-heel to double South Korea’s lead.

The US team, which recently lost the CONCACAF Gold Cup final to Mexico and welcomed back Christian Pulisic, struggled to find momentum. This result marks another disappointing setback for the Americans with the World Cup on the horizon.

Korean goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo ensured the clean sheet with crucial late saves, including a stoppage-time denial of Folarin Balogun.

The international football action continues, with South Korea set to face Mexico next, while the United States will take on Japan.
