Sourav Ganguly files nomination for CAB President’s post, could be elected unopposed

Sourav Ganguly, the legendary former India captain and ex-BCCI President, took a big step in Kolkata on Sunday by filing his nomination for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President role right at the historic Eden Gardens.

This move comes just a day after Ganguly got the nod to represent CAB at the upcoming BCCI elections and Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on September 28. With no one else stepping up for the top CAB spot, Ganguly looks set to win unopposed when the elections roll around on September 22. If he gets the job, he’ll take over from his own brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who’s been leading CAB for nearly three years.

In a statement shared on CAB’s Instagram, Ganguly shared his excitement: “I would like to thank everyone for their support. At CAB, there is no opposition; everyone is a part of this Association. We will all work together to take CAB & Bengal cricket ahead. There are important events coming up at Eden Gardens, like India’s Test match against South Africa, the T20 World Cup, and the Bengal Pro T20 League. I will try and do my best.”

This isn’t Ganguly’s first rodeo—he served as CAB President from 2015 to 2019 before stepping up to become BCCI President until 2022, when Roger Binny took over. Now, he’s back in the mix for Bengal cricket.

Joining him in the nominations are some familiar faces: Nitish Ranjan Dutta for Vice President, Bablu Koley for Secretary, Madan Mohan Ghosh for Joint Secretary, and Sanjay Das for Treasurer.

Ganguly praised his potential team, saying, “Bablu Koley is very experienced. It’s important to have someone with his experience and knowledge. Nitish Ranjan Dutta, Madan Mohan Ghosh, and Sanjay Das are also experienced and have been in this field for a long time. All their experience will be immensely helpful for Bengal cricket.”

One question buzzing now: Will Ganguly keep his role as head of cricket at JSW Sports? That’s the group behind the Delhi Capitals women’s team in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the Pretoria Capitals in SA20 season four? It’ll be fascinating to watch how it all plays out as he eyes a second term leading CAB.
