Sr National Badminton: Surya Tamiri to meet Tanvi Patri in women’s summit clash; Rithvik and Bharat to face off in men’s final

Vijayawada, Dec. 27 (IANS) – The Senior National Badminton Championships in Vijayawada came to a head on Saturday, with local star Surya Charishma Tamiri taking on rising talent Tanvi Patri in the women’s singles final, while Rithvik Sanjeevi S. faced off against Bharat Raghav in the men’s singles showdown.

All four finalists earned their spots by stringing together hard‑won victories in the semifinals.

In the women’s division, Surya Charishma had previously defeated top‑seeded Unnati Hooda in the quarterfinals and then edged world No. 45 Rakshita Sree R over three sets (21‑18, 18‑21, 21‑9). Tanvi Patri staged a comeback from a set down to beat Maharashtra’s Shruti Mundada in a close match (18‑21, 21‑12, 21‑15), landing her on the senior nationals’ final stage for the first time.

The men’s singles semis saw 2024 Odisha Masters champion Rithvik Sanjeevi S. save a match point before pulling off an upset against top seed Kiran George, finishing (21‑16, 17‑21, 22‑20) after 1 hour 8 minutes. Bharat Raghav earned his spot by knocking off second seed M Tharun in 55 minutes with a scoreline of (21‑17, 11‑21, 21‑11).

Mixed doubles semifinals featured top seed Ashith Surya and partner Amrutha P. rallying from a shaky start (8‑21) to defeat third seeds Deep Rambhiya and Sonali Mirkhelkar 21‑18, 21‑18. Second seeds Sathwik Reddy K. and Radhika Sharma topped Nitin Kumar and Kanika Kanwal 21‑13, 21‑14.

The women’s doubles final pitted former national champions together: third seeds Shikha Gautam and Ashwini Bhat K. beat Vennala K. and Reshika U. 21‑11, 21‑15, while second seeds Priya Devi Konjengban and Shruti Mishra overcame eighth seeds Aparna Balan and Simran Singhi 21‑19, 21‑14.

Earlier on Friday, Surya Charishma and experienced Shruti Mundada shocked the top two seeds in straight‑set victories to secure semifinal berths. Surya Charishma dispatched Unnati Hooda in just 36 minutes (21‑12, 21‑15), while Shruti edged former national champion Anupama Upadhyaya 22‑20, 21‑12 in 39 minutes.

In the men’s singles, top seed Kiran George had to grind through a tight encounter against 11th seed Rounak Chauhan, winning 21‑18, 21‑18 in 41 minutes.
