New Zealand’s cricket team is still figuring out Kane Williamson’s role for the rest of the season, head coach Rob Walter said on Monday.
The side’s future plans are in flux, but Walter confirmed that Williamson will play for the Black Caps when he’s ready.

Words from Walter

“We’re still talking about what summer looks like for Kane. He will play, no doubt. The question is when and where.”

The veteran batsman is on a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC). He skipped the recent T20I series against Australia and missed the Zimbabwe tour to play county cricket and The Hundred in England instead.

What’s next on the calendar?

  • Limited‑overs series vs England – starts October 18 in Christchurch.
  • West Indies all‑format tour – arrives in November.

Walter said the squad lineup is fluid because many players are on casual contracts. “Kane deserves time to think it over, just like the other guys,” he added. He emphasized that Williamson wants to play for his country; figuring out the exact schedule may take a week or two.

Injury updates

  • Finn Allen – out with a foot injury.
  • Adam Milne – missing the England white‑ball series because of an ankle problem.

Walter remains hopeful about Mitchell Santner’s recovery from groin pain and the return of Rachin Ravindra, who dropped out of the Australia T20Is after a facial injury during training.

Team culture matters

“The team feels right when everyone can fit in,” Walter said. “Even if we’re missing a few players, the focus is on maintaining the right environment and getting ready for the World Cup squad early in the year.”

With the Black Caps still shaping their lineup for the home summer and the West Indies tour on the horizon, fans can expect updates as the team finalizes its plans.
