Punjab FC finished a comfortable 3‑0 win over Mohammedan SC on Sunday at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, Goa. The victory gives the Punjab team six points from two games and puts them a step closer to the semi‑finals of the AIFF Indian Super League Group C.
Three players scored for Punjab: ninthoinganba Meetei, Samir Zeljkovic and Manglenthang Kipgen. All three goals came from well‑executed combinations and the team’s high pressing.
Coach Panagiotis Dillmperis changed only one name in the starting XI, giving Spanish midfielder Dani Ramirez a spot over last match’s scorer, Princeton Rebello. Mohammedan, coached by Mehrajuddin Wadoo, played the same eleven that had lost to Bengaluru FC.
The first real chance came midway through the first half when a corner hit the post. Shortly after, Punjab’s midfield teamed up – Ramirez, Kipgen, ninthoinganba and midfielder Muhammad Suhail – to create the opening goal. Kipgen sliced through the defence with a left‑footed run‑through pass that left ninthoinganba to finish past the goalkeeper.
Punjab kept the pressure. Three minutes before half‑time, right‑back Khaiminthang Lhungdim delivered a cross into the back post. ninthoinganba headed it back into the danger zone, and new signing Samir Zeljkovic turned the chance into a penalty. His left‑footed shot curled into the bottom corner, giving Punjab a 2‑0 lead.
The second half saw Punjab maintain possession and produce more chances. Mohammedan’s Yash Chickro hit the post from outside the box, but no other shots on goal were close enough. In the 72nd minute, substitute Leon Augustine set up Kipgen, who sealed the game with a side‑footed finish.
Punjab pushed further for more goals, with new signing Nsungusi Effiong creating chances, but the final attempt from Mohammedan, in stoppage time, was parried by Muheet Shabir.
Now Punjab heads to the Jawaharlal Nehru Fatorda Stadium on November 5 to play Bengaluru FC. That match will likely decide the Group C winner.
