Australia’s Sophie Molineux confident ahead of Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025
Sydney, September 5 – Australian women’s cricket star Sophie Molineux is feeling positive as she prepares to make her return to international cricket during the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup. Despite recovering from knee surgery, Sophie is confident in her new training methods and ready to give her best in the big tournament.
Sophie was announced as part of Australia’s 15-player squad for the Women’s Cricket World Cup, set to be held in India and Sri Lanka starting October 1. However, she is unlikely to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, beginning September 14, as she continues her recovery from knee surgery performed in January.
“I’ve had some complications with my knee after ACL surgery and another operation. We hoped to play some games before the World Cup, but that’s not happening now,” Sophie shared. “Honestly, ripping off the Band-Aid and jumping straight into the tournament might be the best way to do it.”
In the past, Sophie felt most confident bowling during full matches and overs. But now, she’s adapting her training to suit her recovery. “I’ve explored other ways to prepare and stay sharp, so I can perform well right from the start of the World Cup,” she added.
Australia will kick off their World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 1 at Holkar Stadium in Indore. Sophie made her debut in ODIs in 2018 and has played 13 matches so far, taking 23 wickets at a solid average of 14.39 and an economy rate of 3.29.
Having missed out on Australia’s 2022 World Cup win due to a foot stress fracture, Sophie is eager to shine in her first 50-over World Cup experience. “Knowing I’d miss out two months ago was tough, but I’ve focused on different parts of my game during this time,” she said. “I also made some small adjustments to my bowling action and spent a lot of time working with coach Shell Nitschke in Brisbane.”
For Sophie, participating in a World Cup is a dream come true. “I’ve never played a one-day World Cup before, so that’s exciting. More than anything, I just want to feel good out on the field again, regardless of which team I’m playing for,” she concluded.
Stay tuned as Sophie and the Australian team gear up for one of the biggest tournaments in women’s cricket!
