Bangladesh’s Jamal Hossain grabbed the spotlight in the opening round of the Telangana Golconda Masters 2025, firing an incredible nine-under 61 to take a one-shot lead at the INR 1 crore Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) event. The tournament kicked off at the Hyderabad Golf Association course in Hyderabad on September 23.

Hot on his heels, Chandigarh’s Akshay Sharma carded an eight-under 62, showcasing some sharp skills to claim second place. The day stayed dry after heavy rain the night before, with overcast skies keeping things cool at around 25 degrees Celsius— a welcome break for the players from the previous day’s heat.

Jamal, a 40-year-old PGTI veteran with five tour wins, dominated with pinpoint tee shots and wedge play in his bogey-free round. He racked up five birdies on the front nine, highlighted by a stunning bunker chip-in and precise wedges. On the back nine, he added four more, sinking 12-foot putts on the final two holes.

“I stayed really consistent with my hitting and chipping today,” Jamal said after his round. He’s currently 14th on the PGTI Order of Merit with two runner-up finishes this season. “I’ve been playing well lately, but I haven’t strung together four strong rounds yet. That’s my goal moving forward. The course looks fantastic, even after all that recent rain.”

Akshay’s round featured two clutch birdie chip-ins, powering him to seven birdies on the back nine. He then grabbed three more birdies on the front nine, offset by two bogeys, for his solid 62.

Gurugram’s Tapendra Ghai sits third with a six-under 64. Sri Lanka’s N. Thangaraja, fresh off a win last week, shot 65 to tie for fourth alongside seven other golfers.

Among the locals, Hyderabad pro Vishesh Sharma posted a 68 to tie for 32nd, leading the home crowd. Delhi’s Arjun Prasad, second on the PGTI merit list, fired a 69 to tie for 42nd.
