“‘The Heart was in the mouth”: Asalanka reflects on Sri Lanka’s thrilling win over Hong Kong

Sri Lanka pulled off a thrilling four-wicket victory over Hong Kong in their Asia Cup match in Dubai, but skipper Charith Asalanka wasn’t entirely happy. Despite the win, he pointed out some sloppy moments in their bowling and a sudden batting collapse that had everyone on edge.

Pathum Nissanka smashed another brilliant half-century, and all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga’s explosive cameo turned the game around for Sri Lanka. They chased down Hong Kong’s total of 149/4 with seven balls to spare, even though Hong Kong fought hard in the second innings. Nissanka’s steady knock kept Sri Lanka in control, but things got tense when they lost four wickets in the 16th over, slipping from 119/2 to 127/6.

Speaking after the match, Asalanka said, “The heart was in the mouth at the end. I’m disappointed about a few things—like our first three overs with the ball and that crazy 16th over where we lost key wickets, including mine. We can’t keep doing this, even in T20 cricket. We’re professionals, and we need to step up. Credit to Hong Kong; they batted really well, and every game brings pressure.”

This win puts Sri Lanka at the top of Group B with two victories from two matches, securing their spot in the Super 4s. Hong Kong, sadly, is out after three straight losses.

Nissanka, who earned Player of the Match honors, praised the challenging pitch and Hong Kong’s bowlers. “It wasn’t easy out there. Hong Kong bowled tightly, but I’m happy with how I’m batting,” he shared.

Earlier, Hong Kong’s Nizakat Khan hit a solid half-century, and Anshuman Rath chipped in with a key knock to help them reach 149/4 in 20 overs after Sri Lanka chose to bowl first. In the chase, Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka steadied the ship after the collapse, guiding Sri Lanka home.

Hong Kong captain Yasim Murtaza was proud of his team’s effort. “Honestly, I’m thrilled with how the boys fought today. We missed a few chances, like those dropped catches, which hurt us. We aimed for 150-160, and playing on this big stage is a dream come true. Back home, we’ll work on improving,” he said.
