At the Bank of Utah Championship in Ivins, Northern California, Indian‑American golfer Sahith Theegala began the weekend strong with a 68‑67 over the first two days. But a 70 in the third round on the Black Desert Resort Golf Course pushed him down the leaderboard.
After 15 holes he was 3 over par. A birdie on the 7th and another on the 9th helped him finish 1 over par for the day. Still, the six‑hole swing from the back‑nine left him 8 under after three rounds, dropping him from the top 10 to T‑27 heading into the final day.
Theegala, who reached World No. 11 in mid‑2024, struggled early on a course that had offered many scoring chances. He bogeyed the first two holes of the 70‑rating round and added another bogey on the sixth. A single birdie on the seventh and another on the ninth kept him only one over par for the day, and he finished three strokes off the lead.
On the same day, 23‑year‑old Michael Brennan – who received a sponsor‑exemption after a strong run on the PGA Tour Americas – posted a spectacular 64, seven under par, taking a two‑shot lead over defending champion Matt McCarty. Brennan, only his third PGA Tour event and first as a pro, hit a double bogey on the second but then shot seven under in an eight‑hole stretch. He now holds one of the ten Korn Ferry Tour cards that earned him the top spot on the PGA Americas points list.
Matt McCarty finished at 16 under after matching Brennan’s 64, tapping into a streak of seven birdies in his final eight holes. Rico Hoey and Kevin Yu also shot 63, while Pierceson Coody closed at 66, all tied for third at 14 under. Hayden Springer (62) and Thorbjørn Olesen (65) followed a shot back at 13 under.
With the weekend over, only three tournaments remain for players to finish inside the top 100 of the FedExCup standings and keep full PGA Tour status for 2026 – a narrower top 100 cut than the 125 spots available last year. The Bank of Utah Championship has already set the stage for a tight race among the tour’s emerging talents.
