Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated India’s biggest haul yet at the World Para‑Athletics Championships, which ran from September 23 to October 5 at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The country won 22 medals – six gold, nine silver and seven bronze – a record for an Indian team.
Modi posted the news on X, calling the outcome “a historic performance” and said the athletes’ success would inspire many people. “I’m proud of every member of our contingent,” he added, wishing them all the best for the future.
India’s rise in para‑sports is visible in past championships. In Dubai 2019 the team took nine medals, ten in Paris 2023 and 17 in Kobe 2024. This year’s 186‑event meet drew more than 2,200 athletes from over 100 nations, and India’s host flag helped the country step onto the world stage.
The government’s investment in para‑athletes is paying off. Fifteen athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme and one from Khelo India lifted medals at the championships. Overall, 23 TOPS athletes and 22 from Khelo India competed, showing how policy and training are producing top results.
The World Para‑Athletics Championships is a major event that usually features only the world’s top organisers. By hosting it, India has shown it can rise to that level, and the Modi government highlighted the support from athletes and staff from almost 100 countries.
The nation’s record haul is more than just numbers. It marks a turning point for Paralympic sport in India and demonstrates that with the right backing, Indian para‑athletes can shine at the highest level.
