Trained bowlers so they step up to bat, says Harshit Rana’s childhood coach Shravan Kumar

New Delhi, Oct 23 – Harshit Rana finished the second India‑Australia ODI with a quick 24 off 18 balls, giving India a useful score at Adelaide Oval on Thursday. His unbeaten spell, built on three fours, capped a good innings that also included knocks from Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel.

Rana’s batting came after India’s bowlers had failed to contain the Australians. He then took a couple of wickets in the second innings, but the effort couldn’t stop the Australian chase. India lost by two wickets, leaving the series tied 1‑1 with one game still to play.

India’s pacer‑coach, Shravan Kumar, told that Rana did “exactly what was needed” and that bowlers should always be ready to contribute runs when the team needs them. Kumar praised the “flawless shots” Rana played and highlighted how he had coached players like Ishant Sharma to be handy at the bottom of the order.

“The batters in the tail are vital. Everyone should get an opportunity to play,” the coach said. “I’ve coached bowlers to step up with the bat and that’s a huge plus.”

Kumar also weighed in on Virat Kohli’s recent form, noting the star batsman had recorded a second straight duck in the series – his first zero in Adelaide. He pointed out that lack of game time and selective play can hurt concentration and performance. “When players only focus on one format, it becomes a casual approach. They need to prepare for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is alike,” he added.

The match itself highlighted differences between Australian and Indian pitches. Kumar said the Adelaide wicket offered higher bounce – “the bounce on Indian wickets is knee‑height; on Australian wickets it’s waist‑height,” he explained. The opposition were better able to harness that bounce, leading to the win.

The Australian run chase finished in 22 balls remaining, and a few dropped catches helped secure the victory. With the series level at 1‑1, cricket fans now await the final ODI to see which side will take the series home.
