Wyoming power plant booming with suspected UFO, drone sightings — but still no answers after over year

For over a year, a swarm of aerial objects—seen as both drones and UFOs—has been hovering above the Red Desert and Jim Bridger Power Plant in Rock Springs, attracting the curiosity of the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office.

Although the Sheriff’s Office listed a handful of sightings over the past 13 months, the exact number remains unclear. The Cowboy State Daily reported this lack of specificity.

Sheriff John Grossnickle was among the first to observe these formations, noting that the most recent display occurred on December 12, according to spokesperson Jason Mower.

Mower said that the objects often gather in synchronized arrangements over the plant, forming complex patterns that repeat at intervals.

Despite repeated attempts, the Sheriff’s Office has not managed to intercept or retrieve any of the objects, citing their high altitude as the primary obstacle.

In a bid to uncover the truth, Grossnickle enlisted the support of Wyoming Representative Harriet Hageman. Mower claimed that she witnessed the formations during a visit to the site, though Hageman has yet to respond to questions.

A spokesperson for the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office later explained that the drones typically fly beyond the reach of ground-based weapons, making them impossible to bring down.

“We’ve worked with everyone, tried every avenue, but no one has provided a clear answer,” Mower told the outlet.

Initially, frightened residents flooded the sheriff’s office with calls about the bewildering fleets. Today, Mower reports that people seem to have accepted the phenomenon as “the new normal.”

Mower emphasizes that, so far, the unknown objects have posed no danger or caused damage to the power plant or surrounding community.

“It’s a recurring event that hasn’t triggered any emergencies beyond our curiosity,” he said.

The sheriff’s office vowed to act promptly should the drones ever pose an immediate risk.

Elsewhere, Niobrara County Sheriff Randy Starkey conveyed to the Cowboy State Daily that locals in his jurisdiction reported similar drone sightings near Lance Creek, roughly 300 miles from the Jim Bridger Power Plant. These incidents spanned from late October 2024 to early March.

Starkey expressed relief that the strange activity had ceased, according to the outlet.

Nationwide attention on drone anomalies peaked last year, when widespread sightings over New Jersey spurred public concern. Shortly after the start of his second term, President Trump had to clarify that the drones were FAA‑approved, assuring the public that they did not threaten national security.

Despite official reassurances, sentiment remained skeptical, and the phenomenon gradually receded as reports dwindled.

In October, an unnamed military contractor source revealed that his firm might have played a role in generating the public hysteria, according to the Post.
