India is gearing up to host the 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, and Uttar Pradesh is stepping up big time to make it happen. As the country’s most populous state, UP wants to boost India’s Olympic dreams by building top-notch training facilities, spotting young talent at the grassroots level, offering great incentives to athletes, and spreading a love for fitness and healthy living.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), under President PT Usha, kicked things off last October by sending a Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This move shows India’s strong push to join the global sports stage and prove it can pull off a massive event like the Olympics.
IAS officer and para-badminton star Suhas L Yathiraj shared his excitement in an interview. “India aims to host the Olympics in the next decade,” he said. “UP, as the largest state, is ready to contribute. We’re not just building world-class infrastructure for athletes to train—we’re hunting for raw talent from the ground up, rewarding them with the best support, and creating a fitness culture across the state. It’s all about a complete, holistic plan.”
This bid highlights India’s growing sports ambitions. The government and sports community are all in, determined to turn this dream into reality and welcome the world as a perfect host.
Echoing the sentiment, former table tennis champion Achanta Sharath Kamal believes hosting the 2036 Olympics could transform India into a sports powerhouse. “If the IOC picks India, it’ll leave a lasting legacy,” he told . “Even if it’s 2036 or later, the government’s focus is clear: build a strong sporting nation. I’d love to see the Olympics here—it’ll spark a huge movement, and we could win way more medals.”
Remember, India wrapped up the Paris Olympics last year with six medals—five bronzes and one silver. That’s progress, but everyone’s hungry for more.
On top of the Olympics bid, the IOA just greenlit a proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games at a special meeting earlier this month. PT Usha couldn’t hide her joy about the approval. Ahmedabad looks set to be the host city, with proposals due by August 31 and a decision coming from Commonwealth Sport in November. Exciting times ahead for Indian sports!
