Austin, Oct 20 – Max Verstappen won the 2025 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, turning his pole spot into a clear victory and tightening the championship race. Red Bull’s Dutch star led from the start and never gave way, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris tried to keep up but fell behind.
The win changes the title picture with only five races left. Norris’s second place cut Piastri’s lead to 14 points, and Verstappen closed the gap to the Australian to just 40 points.
Verstappen’s weekend was a textbook performance. He won the sprint race, earned pole on Saturday, and then ran a flawless Sunday. From the lights he beat Norris and Charles Leclerc into the inside line at Turn 1, then set the pace and held on. He managed tyres, strategy and traffic with steady precision, proving Red Bull can win on any track.
McLaren faced headaches early. During the sprint race the team’s drivers collided, and the loss of time saw them lagging behind. Norris fought back, passing Leclerc five laps from the finish to take second, but he never pressured Verstappen.
Piastri struggled for a third straight race and finished fifth, one spot ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes. The fact that Verstappen has earned more points than both McLaren drivers in the last four races shows momentum has shifted toward Red Bull.
Leclerc impressed from a soft–tyre start, using the extra grip to hold Norris at bay for most of the race. That move let him sit in second for a long stretch. Norris, who lined up next to Verstappen on the front row, fell back when Leclerc moved ahead but reclaimed second in a late move at Turn 12. Hamilton faded to fourth as the tyre life wore out.
Behind the front six, Yuki Tsunoda came in seventh for Red Bull, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg’s Sauber. Haas driver Ollie Bearman finished ninth, and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten for Aston Martin.
The headline story is that Red Bull has found its versatility again. Earlier this season the team seemed patchy, but this race shows they can fight and win on any circuit, especially with Verstappen at the front.
With Piastri’s advantage shrinking and Norris eyeing a comeback, the last five races promise an exciting finish to the 2025 season.
