Union Home Minister Amit Shah stopped by the Khadi India showroom in New Delhi’s bustling Connaught Place on Thursday, October 2, to mark Gandhi Jayanti. He picked up some Khadi products, honoring Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of self-reliance and Indian independence.
Speaking at the event, Shah highlighted how Gandhi tapped into the heart of India, rallying everyday people to challenge British rule. “Gandhi wove key ideas into the freedom struggle that still guide India’s path today,” Shah said, pointing to Khadi and Swadeshi as game-changers.
These concepts didn’t just speed up the push for freedom—they lit up lives for millions of poor families across the country by boosting local crafts and economies, Shah explained. For years, though, Khadi and Swadeshi faded into the background.
That changed in 2003 when Narendra Modi, then Gujarat’s Chief Minister, kicked off a major revival campaign for Khadi. Fast forward to today, and Khadi products are back in everyday use for many Indians. Under Prime Minister Modi’s 11-year leadership, sales of Khadi and village industry goods have skyrocketed fivefold, jumping from Rs. 33,000 crore to more than Rs. 1.7 lakh crore.
Shah credited Modi’s Mann Ki Baat radio show for reigniting Swadeshi spirit, tying it to India’s economic growth and the Make in India initiative. “Inspired by this, millions of families have sworn off foreign goods at home, and countless shopkeepers have stopped stocking them,” he noted.
Urging everyone to join the movement, Shah called on Indian families to commit to buying at least Rs. 5,000 worth of Khadi products each year. “This simple step could create jobs for millions and brighten their futures,” he said.
Embracing Swadeshi also fits perfectly with India’s bold goal to become a global leader by 2047, Shah added. He encouraged people to weave Khadi promotion and Swadeshi values into daily life, passing them down to the next generation for a stronger, self-reliant India.
