West Indies legend Vivian Richards said he thinks India’s new ODI captain, Shubman Gill, is his favourite batsman, while he remains a huge fan of Virat Kohli’s batting style.
Gill takes over the limited‑overs job after Rohit Sharma stepped down. He also leads the Test side. His first big test will be the three‑match ODI series against Australia that starts on Oct. 19. The series will also feature the return of Rohit and Virat Kohli—players who ended their T20 careers last year and announced their retirement from Test cricket before the Anderson‑Tendulkar Trophy.
Richards was asked about whether Rohit and Virat could make it to the 2027 World Cup. He said the decision is up to the selectors, but he “super loves” how Kohli hits the ball and praised Gill as a “magnificent player.”
While the Australian tour is just a week away, Gill is keeping his mind on India’s current home Test series against the West Indies. India led the series 1‑0 after a dominant win by an innings and 140 runs in Ahmedabad. Richards said he hopes the West Indies will step up and play a competitive match. “If the team fights, things will work out,” he added.
India’s change in leadership comes as the board returns to a new captain for the bat‑heavy 400‑plus side, and both Richards and the Indian board look ahead to the 2027 World Cup and what the future brings.
