President Droupadi Murmu celebrated India’s first-ever win of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 on Monday, calling the triumph a “watershed moment” for Indian sports. She thanked every player for making history with a 52‑run victory over South Africa in the final held at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
The Indian women’s team posted a solid 298 for 7 in 50 overs, with all‑rounder Deepti Sharma leading the charge. Sharma scored 58 and took 5‑for‑39, the best all‑round performance of the match. South Africa fell short, ending at 246 with 45.3 overs after a determined chase by captain Laura Wolvaardt.
India’s win marks the country’s second ODI World Cup title, adding to the men’s 1987 and 2011 wins. Only England and Australia, before India, have captured both men’s and women’s world cups.
The victory was sharp‑witted. India entered the knockout stage after losing three straight group games and narrowly secured a spot in the semifinals. In the semis, they shocked Australia, and then capped their campaign by defeating South Africa in the final.
President Murmu praised the team’s effort: “I admire the way the girls made India proud. This victory will lift women’s cricket to even higher levels.” Her message on X highlighted the emotional impact of these historic moments.
India’s long wait for a women’s world title is over. The championship is expected to inspire a new generation of female cricketers across the country, proving that perseverance and teamwork can overcome adversity.
