Australia’s cricket captain Alyssa Healy is pumped up about defending their ODI World Cup title. The tournament kicks off on September 30 in India, and the Aussies, who have claimed the trophy seven times, face New Zealand in their opener in Indore on October 1.
In a column for the ICC, Healy shared that the team feels in top shape. “We’ve had valuable time together in camps over the winter,” she wrote. “Everyone enjoyed tweaking their prep through the Australia A series and domestic games in England.” Now in India, the squad is wrapping up final touches. “We’re excited to be here—it’s a great spot to play, and we’re pretty familiar with it. We’ve put in the work on and off the field, so we’re confident and ready for some ODI action.”
The team heads into the event riding high from a 2-1 series win over India, highlighted by a massive 412-run total in the decisive match in New Delhi. Healy didn’t rack up big scores in that series, but she’s thrilled to log game time after battling foot and knee injuries over the past year. “Playing those six Australia A games at home was huge for me,” she said. “It was a big win coming back from injury.”
Adding to the good news, left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux returns after knee surgery in January. She’s one of five Aussies stepping into their first 50-over World Cup. Healy praised the squad’s mix of fresh talent and veterans. “Our group is super balanced, with young players complementing the experienced ones,” she noted. “Even the newcomers have handled major tournaments and high-stakes series.” Healy is especially stoked about Molineux’s comeback. “She’s had a tough time with injuries, so it’s awesome to see her back in the green and gold for the World Cup.”
Australia will also take on two matches in Sri Lanka, and Healy is optimistic. “India and Sri Lanka bring different challenges, but we’re embracing them,” she said. The team hasn’t played there since 2016, though many players have toured for development series. “It’ll be great to return and chase wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.”
Healy wrapped up by highlighting what she loves about ODI World Cups: facing every team to claim victory. “It’s a tough tournament where you must beat the world to lift the trophy,” she said. “We need consistency in every game, and our group can’t wait for the challenge.”
