Tehran, Oct 22 – President Masoud Pezeshkian urged Tehran and Baghdad to step up cooperation in every field, officials said. He met Iraqi National Security Adviser Qasim Al‑Araji in Tehran on Tuesday and called the backdrop between the two countries “excellent.”
Pezeshkian said tighter ties would boost security, trade, science and culture for both nations and, he added, for the wider Muslim world. He also highlighted that regular talks can help both sides shape their stance on regional and global issues.
Al‑Araji confirmed that Iraq sees its security as tied to Iran’s. He reaffirmed Baghdad’s promise to guard against threats from the shared border, echoing a 2023 security pact that both sides agreed to enforce.
During his visit, Al‑Araji met with senior Iranian officials, including Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and IRGC Chief Commander Mohammad Pakpour.
In August 2025, Iraq and Iran inked a new security agreement to coordinate border protection. The MoU was signed by Larijani and Al‑Araji, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al‑Sudani said the deal would deepen partnerships at all levels.
The messages from Tehran and Baghdad point to stronger ties and a united front on regional security and economic cooperation.
