The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) said it has no part in the controversy surrounding wrestler Nirmala Boora. The federation clarified that Boora requested to compete under the Haryana Police banner—a team that isn’t linked to the WFI—so the question arose whether she could even enter a state championship.
Vinesh Phogat, who sits in the Haryana Assembly for the Julana constituency, posted a statement on Saturday backing Nirmala. She claimed that it was unfair for the national trials to deny Boora a spot.
“Nirmala Boora is a highly respected and accomplished athlete from Haryana… she was treated extremely unfairly during the National trials held in Haryana… Nirmala Boora was not allowed to participate in the trials; no reason was given, and no official information was provided,” Vinesh wrote.
A WFI representative answered the criticism by asking if Boora had taken part at the district level. If she hadn’t, the federation can’t overlook those who did compete and progressed through the ranks. The official also pointed out that Boora now wants to represent Haryana Police, a group that is outside the federation’s jurisdiction. Therefore, the question is how she could be permitted to compete in a state championship.
The official went on to say that Vinesh is dragging the federation into a matter that should stay within the state’s purview. The federation has asked the state body to look into the issue and submit a report.
“Vinesh Phogat is dragging the WFI into this unnecessarily. This is a Haryana state issue, not a WFI matter. Even so, we have asked the state body to examine the matter and submit a report,” the official added.
