BJP to challenge any move by Bengal Assembly Secretariat against Calcutta HC’s order on Mukul Roy’s MLA status (Ld)

In West Bengal, the BJP is ready to fight any move by the state Assembly Secretariat that tries to take the Supreme Court over the Calcutta High Court’s latest ruling.

Local news says the Assembly Secretariat has already consulted the state Advocate General, Kishor Datta, to plan possible legal steps against the High Court’s decision. In response, BJP members are getting legal help of their own.

Ambika Roy, a BJP MLA from Kalyani in Nadia district, said that if the Assembly chooses to file a case with the Apex Court, the BJP will also challenge it. “We’re speaking with our legal advisers too,” she told reporters. “Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader in the Assembly, will announce the next step.”

Roy is one of just two BJP legislators—alongside Suvendu Adhikari—who asked the Calcutta High Court to keep Mukul Roy in the Assembly. On November 13, the court’s division bench, led by Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi, cancelled Roy’s membership and set aside the Speaker’s order that had not removed him.

Mukul Roy was once a senior TMC (All India Trinamool Congress) official. He joined the BJP before the 2021 West Bengal elections and won the Krishnanagar (Uttar) Assembly seat. After the elections, Roy joined TMC again, but he did not resign from the Assembly, allowing his BJP membership to stay in place.

The Assembly Speaker had earlier rejected the BJP’s plea to cancel Roy’s seat on the grounds that he was an official BJP candidate. The High Court’s December‑early ruling overturned that decision, leaving the BJP ready to defend itself if the state Assembly strives to appeal to the Supreme Court.
