On December 13 in New Delhi, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, the secretary of India’s Ministry of Ayush, told LatestNewsX that the country is stepping up as a global frontrunner in merging artificial intelligence with traditional medicine.
He spoke about the significance of the upcoming second WHO summit on traditional medicines, which is expected to give the sector a major boost. “India is leading the way in AI for traditional medicine,” Kotecha said. He added that a joint working group between the World Health Organization, the International Telecommunication Union and the World Intellectual Property Organization is developing AI solutions for health, and India has been accepted as the chair of a dedicated group on traditional medicine.
The secretary also highlighted that India is building a wide range of generative‑AI chatbots tailored to its traditional medicine, digital solutions and digital medicine platforms.
Kotecha mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to launch the “Ayush Integrated Portal” – known as the “Ayush Grid” – during the summit. He described the Grid as a one‑stop app covering every aspect of Ayush, featuring a user‑friendly AI‑integrated interface for patients, industry players, researchers and regulators.
The summit, set to take place at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, will bring together more than 110 countries to discuss national commitments to traditional medicine. “This is a landmark event because it not only showcases India’s leadership in traditional medicine but also demonstrates how such practices can be mainstreamed in public health and research,” Kotecha added.
He also announced the launch of a global traditional medicine library. “The digital library will index over 1.6 million publications, providing a single resource for all matters related to traditional medicine—70,000 of these records come from India,” he said.
