Colombo, Oct. 17 – South Africa Women paced a clear win over Sri Lanka in a rain‑shortened match at the R. Premadasa Stadium, keeping their bid for a Women’s World Cup semi‑final alive.
South Africa chased a rain‑adjusted target of 121 and finished 10 wickets to spare. The win came off a strong opening partnership: skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits added 121 runs before the bowlers got anyone in. Wolvaardt finished unbeaten on 60, while Brits made a tidy 55 with two boundaries that left the hosts cracking.
Sri Lanka’s innings began nicely. Vishmi Gunaratne hit 34 off 34 balls and the score rose to 59 runs in the final eight overs. After a rain break at 12 overs and a dropped bat to 20‑over limits, Sri Lanka ended with 105 for 7. Gunaratne left the game early when a ball from Ayabonga Khaka hit her knee. Masabata Klaas (2‑for‑18) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (3‑for‑30) held the plate, but Nilakshi de Silva and Kavisha Dilhari added the final runs.
The win is South Africa’s fourth of five matches and keeps them in the hunt for a semi‑final spot. Sri Lanka drops to seventh, needing a strong finish in their remaining games.
