England’s women’s team secured an impressive 8‑wicket victory over New Zealand in their final group match of the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup.
The match, played at the ACA‑VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, saw England chase 169 with ease, finishing at 172/2 in 29.2 overs.

Amy Jones shone with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 86 from 92 balls. Her performance marked the highest individual score for England in an ODI World Cup and helped the team finish top of the table. Jones shared a record‑setting opening partnership of 75 runs with Tammy Beaumont, who contributed 40 runs. Together, the pair guided England to the target in just 124 balls, leaving the game decided with four overs to spare.

England’s bowlers started the match with a quiet dismissal of New Zealand’s first wicket, reducing the hosts to 89/1. A sharp burst from Linsey Smith, who finished with 3‑30, put the pressure on the New Zealand top order. Nat Sciver‑Brunt and Alice Capsey each grabbed two wickets, and they helped collapse the Kiwi side, who lost nine wickets for only 79 runs.

The target set for England was 169. Amy Jones drove 11 fours and a six, and maintained an attacking stance throughout her knock. Heather Knight opened the scoring for England with a four on the first ball and continued to hit boundaries from the opening crease. The spinners sparked a gradual tempo change in the innings, offering England a workout on the slower parts of the pitch.

The match saw notable moments for both teams. New Zealand bowler Sophie Devine was taken off the field in the opening over after a diving catch attempt, and she eventually completed her final ODI career with a respectable contribution, just missing out on a remarkable finish. Devine left the field with a warm guard of honour from both the New Zealand side and her English opponents, ending her ODI career on a high note.

The England victory secured them the second spot in the points table, ahead of South Africa. This placement could be crucial if weather disrupts knockout games, as England would move to the final automatically should a washout occur on both the match day and the reserve day. The next game for England is a semi‑final at Guwahati on 29 October, where they will face South Africa.

Key statistics from the game:

  • New Zealand: 168/10 in 38.2 overs. Notable batters – Georgia Plimmer 43, Amelia Kerr 35.
  • England bowling: Linsey Smith 3‑30 (2.4 overs), Nat Sciver‑Brunt 2‑31 (5.1 overs).
  • England chase: 172/2 in 29.2 overs. Amy Jones 86* (92 balls), Tammy Beaumont 40.
  • England bowling in the chase: Lea Tahuhu 1‑9, Sophie Devine 1‑20.

Amy Jones’s dominant performance, England’s comprehensive bowling effort and a decisive chase put the England women’s squad firmly in the spotlight as the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup moves toward its climax.
