The Women’s World Cup in Colombo was set for drama, and it started with a mix‑up at the toss.
At R Premadasa Stadium, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan’s Fatima Sana skipped the long‑running handshake before the coin flip. When the coin landed, Fatima called “tails”, but Australian presenter Mel Jones announced “heads”. The ICC match referee, Shandre Fritz, didn’t catch the switch and handed the toss to Pakistan. The Pakistan captain took the correct call and elected to field first.
“Anything under 250 could be a good chase,” Fatima said after winning the toss. “We’re hoping for some moisture on the wicket, but we’re confident.”
India’s squad welcomed a change – Amanjot Singh Shah was out sick, and Renuka Singh Thakur filled the spot. Harmanpreet enjoyed a 59‑run win over Sri Lanka in their last game but had a tough opening to get smashed by Bangladesh, a reminder that the India‑Pakistan matchup is always a thriller.
India has never lost an ODI or a 50‑over World Cup game to Pakistan, so both teams are eager to add to the rivalry.
